If you were out and about in Gower at the end of April, you may well have seen some of the 200 hikers who had traveled from all over the UK to take part in a sponsored charity ‘Big Walk’ to raise funds for St James’s Place Foundation, which supports children’s, cancer and hospice charities.
Danni Watts-Jones, MD of DWJ Wealth Management Ltd in Baglan, was one of this army of hikers - she had been training since the start of the year to take part in the 35.5 mile all-terrain walk, which took in such highlights as Oxwich and Three Cliffs Bay.
The foundation largely relies on the St. James’s Place large community of staff nationwide who support the Foundation in any way they can. Since 1999, every pound raised by the community has been matched by the company. And on this occasion, the company generously offered to not only match, but double every pound each walker raised from this weekend.
Danni personally exceeded her target, and has already raised over £1600. By the time the company matches and doubles that figure, it will be nearly £5,000.
After the walk Danni said “There were a few occasions along the route that I wondered if I would reach the finish line. But having such tremendous support from my family, friends and clients who sponsored me, and knowing how much the various charities benefit from the foundation, really spurred me on. Meeting so many other people from the St James’s Place community whilst taking in Gower in the springtime was an added bonus.”
Thanks to her contribution, and the other walkers, the final figure - with match funding - is expected to reach more than a staggering £150,000. The hike was no walk in the park, but that’s a pretty impressive figure for a weekend’s ‘work’. Well done to all who took part.
